1. Define which techniques you tried and mastered? Struggled?
For this painting I continued to practice acrylic on canvas. This requires a generally thinner application of paint compared to masonite which I began painting on last year. Using acrylic on white canvas forced me to walk a line between using thin application to take advantage of the translucence of the paint and not going so thin as to leave areas of canvas uncovered. It also was a challenge in using different brush strokes because the lower areas of the canvas need to get filled with paint. I went over several areas of this painting in vigorous circular motions to press paint into the canvass. 2. How did you draw inspiration from other artists techniques or aesthetics in your work? In what ways did you derive meaning or gain historical perspectives from their work? Why these artists? This piece was inspired by Teresa Gostanza. Her emphasis on dreams and the imagination in her work are reflected by the lack of coherence in content combined with visual harmony between shapes and colors. I wanted to play with how images can coexist in our imagination sin was the don't in the external world. 3. Describe the evolution of your piece. Decisions made. Compositional elements. The piece began with the scene of the figure on the mountain in the lower third of the composition. I left room to build outward from this image as new ideas came to my mind. The diagonal line is a form that began as clouds that I played with to resemble rock or mountains as well. I just became fascinated with the form because it is nothing but tied elements of the piece together because it was so organic. 4. If you could consider doing something over, explain why you would do this and what you would do next time? I would have darkened the negative space between the heart in the lower righthand corner because it would have given a more three dimensional look for the heart to appear imbedded in the gray form. 5. Elaborate on how this piece links with your other pieces? What is the common thread? This piece involves symbolism pertaining to healing in the form of resurrection. The intersection of faith, imagination, death and rebirth in the composition encompasses an aspect of the subject I'm exploring visually which is the intricacy of the healing journey. |
