"Hard Man" Oil pastel on paper. 17 x 24'". 2018.

Project 7:
For this piece, I continued working with oil pastel. I tried using more creative colors to lowlight the man’s face, though I struggled. I did not research a particular artist for this piece, though for my entire body of work, I’ve been looking at the work of Igor Sychev, Helgi Friðjónsson, and Sylvestre Evrard. The piece evolved from the image of a strongman holding a boulder, I ended up putting him on a white background with the Adichie quote to make the composition more dramatic and to draw attention to the moral of the work. If I could do this piece over again, I would be more careful matting the piece. I was in a rush and ripped the pastel drawing. I would do the piece on heavier paper as well. This piece links visually to the others because there is one man in a lot of negative space. “Hard Man” links thematically to the others because it is portraying men in a more vulnerable nature than is common in traditional art. |
