1. Define which techniques you tried and mastered? Struggled?
This composition didn't challenge me in terms of technique as much as it did imagination. All of my pieces for the most part have been anchored by a landscape, so there were rules I had to be aware of like light source, proportion, and shadow. This composition is not grounded in reality to the same extent I am used to. I had no reference for light or shadow on the heart so it was up to my imagination to make it the way I wanted which was a struggle. There was no "right way" to do this piece. 2. How did you draw inspiration from other artists techniques or aesthetics in your work? In what ways did you derive meaning or gain historical perspectives from their work? Why these artists? This year's body of work has been heavily influenced by the Morgan Greer tarot deck. Tarot art breaks the rules because it has no intention of representing reality. "The Tower" is a card about breaking through patterns that are no longer suitable and features dramatic lightening bolts against a stormy sky. I wanted to take this concept and translate it to something a little bit more visceral. 3. Describe the evolution of your piece. Decisions made. Compositional elements. The composition began with the background which was a mixture of cool blue and titanium white that I darkened with black india ink radially away from the center to draw the eye towards the center of the piece. The lightening bolt was added to be a focal point in and of itself and catch the eye and draw it down to the heart. 4. If you could consider doing something over, explain why you would do this and what you would do next time? Nah I think I'm good. Not my favorite piece ever but it is serving it's purpose. 5. Elaborate on how this piece links with your other pieces? What is the common thread? This piece represents the will to learn how to love and to make the necessary life changes to accommodate that kind of endeavor. This body of work is all about learning about love through personal healing and healing through love. The common thread is the relationship between love and healing. Visually, this piece show the heart receiving something it wouldn't have had otherwise so it provides the viewer the opportunity to imagine what happens to a heart when the promise of love is present. |
